If you like making jewelry at some point you may want to sell some of them and turn your hobby into a jewelry making business.

If you're looking to sell handmade items, you'll find that there are a lot of choices to make as to where and how you'd like them to be sold.

First you'll want to think through whether you want to sell on a third party site (that is, a site that's owned by someone else, like eBay) or your own craft website. There are a growing number of websites that specialize in the sale of handmade goods. The three main charges are upfront listing fee, a fee on completed sales and a maintenance fee.

Let's discuss it...

eBay.com is one of the first sites folks think of for selling online
eBay is probably the most well known worldwide market place. eBay is an open market for almost anything that is a tangible item. It does not specialize in handmade items, however it is included as it is still an important website for crafters.

Though it is very overcrowded and between the listing fees, commission fees, store cost, paypal fees and postage has never really been profitable for "handmade goods".
Some artist do, however, sell work on eBay successfully.

Etsy.com
This site is a dream come true for artists and crafters.
Selling handmade arts and crafts on eBay is a big business but upstart online seller http://etsy.com is coming on strong.

Established in 2005, Etsy has grown significantly to tens of thousands of sellers and five times that in buyer accounts. The friendly atmosphere and easy user interface makes this a first choice for many artisans to sell their wares.

For one thing, its fees are lower than eBay and a lot less confusing. Like eBay, Etsy's free to join, but you'll only pay 3.5% of the sale price of your art (when you sell your work) and just 20 cents to list an item for 4 months. After 4 months, you'll have to list it again for another 20 cents.
In contrast, the listing fees at eBay go up with the price of your artwork, plus they take a bigger percentage of your selling price.

Rubylane.com
It's aiming at a high-end shopper
You may also consider selling on http://rubylane.com It has always been known more for the antiques and collectibles market - although they did just recently add a new "lane" for Artisan Jewelry.

The selling fees at Ruby Lane are higher than you'll find on Etsy, but they are aiming at a high-end shopper, so again, you won't struggle to compete with sellers who have unreasonably low prices.

RubyLane's Fee: For example, after the one-time $75 setup fee has been paid, and the listing fees for stock added, for a shop with up to 50 items, the minimum monthly cost of maintaining a shop on Ruby Lane is $15 for the maintenance fee and $20 for advertising

Artfire.com
A new way for artisans to sell online
Unlike some of the other craft-based store options, http://artfire.com offers a free store which allows someone to list up to 10 items with no cost, commission, dues or trickle charges. That means 10 items at a time with up to four pictures per item with absolutely no fee.

Artfire also offers verified level with unlimited listings with Zero Fees and full site functionality, including customized shops (membership at US $15.95/month)

If you want to link back to your Etsy shop, they offer stats so you can route your marketing to your ArtFire shop and still throw in a link back to your Etsy shop.

So far I like their system. You can also advertise where else you sell which is something you can NOT do on eBay or Esty.

Check out selling your hand crafted items on http://shophandmade.com They already had a world-class eCommerce system, a data center, and brilliant people who knew and loved crafts.

You can sell on ShopHandmade entirely for free. The only fees you have to pay are to paypal.

They offer some inexpensive promotion services, but they are entirely your choice. Their percentage fee is literally "pay us whatever you want" and you pick the percentage or even nothing at all!

Frequently they have sponsors who are willing to pay all or part of the listing fee for you. When you list an item, the available sponsors will appear in the Listing Fee space. Choose the sponsor that you like and they will pay the fee to shophandmade.com.

No Hidden Fees:
There is no fee to buy items through ShopHandmade. There are no monthly fees, no membership fees, and no minimums.
